About the roleAs the third engineering hire at Seven Starling, you will be a cornerstone of our technical organization, helping to shape the architecture, systems, and culture that will power our next stage of growth. Partnering closely with our COO, Founding Senior Principal Engineer, Senior Full Stack Engineer, and Product team, you’ll ensure our platform is robust, secure, and scalable while also leading the build of innovative new products and experiences that set new standards for impact. This is a high-impact role for a true builder: someone who thrives in early-stage environments, brings strong architectural judgment, and has deep experience in healthcare technology. You’ll be both a significant hands-on contributor and a strategic technical thought partner, serving as a multiplier for the engineering team as we scale. What you'll doBuild & ship innovative products quickly: Balance speed and quality to deliver innovative new products, platform improvements, and operational tooling at startup velocity. Ensure healthcare-grade compliance: Design and implement HIPAA-compliant systems that safeguard PHI and maintain rigorous security and audit standards. Collaborate across functions: Work closely with the COO, Senior Product Manager, Operations, and Clinical leadership to build solutions that meet diverse stakeholder needs. Contribute to our engineering best practices: Lead on design patterns, testing strategies, deployment pipelines, observability, and incident response. Act as a thought partner to leadership: Provide strategic technical input to company roadmap and help evaluate trade-offs between speed, scale, and compliance. Partner with the Founding Senior Principal Engineer to set technical direction & architecture: Drive decisions around system design, infrastructure, scalability, and security, ensuring our architecture can support rapid growth and long-term resilience. Mentor and level up the team: Help mentor and coach our team as it grows, sharing knowledge, and helping instill a culture of technical excellence and accountability. Who you areSeasoned startup engineer: 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, with at least 3+ years in startups where you’ve built and scaled systems under fast growth. Healthcare technology veteran: Demonstrated experience building and scaling products in healthcare or similarly regulated industries (HIPAA, SOC2, or equivalent). Architect & hands-on builder: Deep experience designing and implementing distributed, cloud-native systems. Proficiency with Google Cloud (GKE, Pub/Sub) and Postgres is a strong plus. Fullstack expertise: Highly skilled with modern frontend (React/TypeScript) and backend technologies; able to comfortably span the stack when needed. Strong communicator & collaborator: Capable of articulating complex technical decisions to both engineers and non-technical stakeholders. Leader & multiplier: Natural mentor who raises the bar for technical quality and operational excellence across the team. Mission-driven: Passionate about improving healthcare access and outcomes, and energized by the chance to shape a product that changes lives.
