Deputy Division Manager, Wildland Fire Management Division (WMS3)

About the position The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is looking for a Deputy Division Manager in the Wildland Fire Management Division (WFMD). This position is responsible for fire prevention, preparedness, and suppression, including aviation, on 13 million acres of state and private forestland. The role includes protecting air quality through regulation of silvicultural burning and smoke management, community preparedness, and overseeing the Department of Corrections (DOC) correction camps program which trains and manages incarcerated individuals who support and suppress wildland fire. The position requires outstanding skills in working with people and developing relationships both internally and externally, representing the agency when working with partners, the general public, and interacting with the media. Responsibilities • Assist with managing the Department's Wildland Fire Management Division. • Directly supervise the Operations Assistant Division Manager and Aviation Assistant Division Manager. • Manage two large sub-divisions of the Wildland Fire Management Division. • Represent the Department on various interagency and cooperator groups. • Participate in Department advisory groups including the Wildfire Advisory Committee, Forest Health Advisory Committee, and Utility Wildland Fire Prevention Advisory Committee. Requirements • Bachelor's degree in Forestry or Natural Resources with an emphasis in Wildland Fire Management, Forest Management, Forest Ecology, Watershed Management, or other natural resource management specialty. • 10 years or more of experience and knowledge of wildland fire management within the United States. • Knowledge of state and federal laws, budgets, and policies applicable to fire protection and suppression. • Experience with emergency management principles and the roles of federal, state, and local organizations. • Ability to develop, maintain, and strengthen partnerships. • Experience working with diverse and competing interest groups. Nice-to-haves • Bachelor of Science in a field related to DNR's core mission (forestry, business, emergency management, etc.). • Preferred wildland fire qualifications equivalent to Incident Commander, Type 3. • Recognized experience of at least 10 years leading a dynamic organization of at least 50 members. • Strong operations-related project management skills.
